How to Play Dungeons & Dragons With AI

One of the best ways to test the reasoning capabilities of any large language model is by playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons. We haven't tested all LLMs, but ChatGPT-4o, Claude 3, DeepSeek, Microsoft Copilot, and Grok 3 can play.

Simply start a new session and use the prompt below to begin a new game. With the voice modes in ChatGPT and Grok, you can even continue the session by speaking to the AI.

We are playing the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. I will play my character, while you act as the game master. I will describe my character's actions, and you will respond as the game master by narrating the consequences and NPC reactions.

Focus on the narrative aspects of the game. For dice rolls and skill checks, you will consider my character's level and determine a fair and likely outcome. Keep your descriptions concise - preferably a paragraph or shorter when appropriate.

Never assume my character’s actions; always give me a chance to react. After every answer simply ask: What do you want to do next?
